Making Beds in a Burning House
Nice album name. The track names are great, too: "I’m Pretty Sure I Can See Molecules," "Ear Nose & Throat," "Ear Nose & Throat Pt. II" and "Floribraska. I think that these guys are pretty clever. According to their press release, a bunch of other people seem to as well. That’s good.
This is the kind of record that I listen to and think sounds fun. When I say “fun,” I’m not talking about Weird Al Yankovic. That’s “funny.” When I say “fun,” I mean that it sounds like the people are enjoying themselves and the music that they are making. It isn’t an obsession or an “art.” It is having fun. Art is fine and all, but it takes itself a little too seriously sometimes. That’s not to say that music doesn’t seem thought out or well-written.
The guitars are mostly jangly (not a real word) or emo (not a real word). This isn’t emo, though. This might be the opposite of emo. That’s not to say it doesn’t have pretty, loud or intense parts. It has all those. It just doesn’t seem like it’s going to start crying about not getting the girl, things not working out with the girl, not liking the girl or whatever emo songs are about these days. The lyrics aren’t all happy, either. Maybe that’s what’s appealing: happy music and sad content. Maybe it’s the vocals. Maybe it’s the clever part. Whatever it is, I like it.
