Manda and the Marbles

Angels With Dirty Faces

Contributor: Joel Edelman

It's a brand new record for 2005, Manda and the Marbles' brand new album, Angels With Dirty Faces.

This is a super solid release, and if there weren't so much competition, it would have a shot at Album of the Year. Manda and the Marbles are a four piece with three dudes and a female singer, whose name really is Manda. And their guitarist is really named Joe A Damage. Yep.

The production matches the music, which for some reason is really hard for a lot of bands. This is a rock band. It's mixed like a rock album. It's not garage pop, and it's not grrl angst. It's a rock band. And let me tell you, I'd rather listen to Manda and the Marbles than Pat Benatar any day.

"Say Anything" is not about the movie, and that's what I like best about it. Well, that and the 1985-era keyboards that play in the background. OMD, anybody?

"Boys Will Be Boys" is one of those tracks you can make if you're female-led. I would, however, like to hear a Pansy Division cover of it. Oh yeah, baby.

"Seventeen" is my favorite track. It's the album's resident ballad, and it focuses on Manda (no last name) and her lyrics. The song exudes confidence.

This is a great album for your mainstream friends. It's nonthreatening but still manages to kick some ass. Amazing, ain't it?
