Deerhoof

Green Cosmos

Contributor: Eli Ellsworth

Interstellar propulsion systems are go! Set coordinates! Initiate launch sequence! Liftoff, we have liftoff! Deerhoof have cleared the stratosphere on their maiden voyage to the emerald green beyond! Uncovering Deerhoof’s latest seven-song EP, Green Cosmos, was like stumbling across an immaculate oasis in the scorching desert. What a splendid instance of ingenious noise-pop experimentalism. Seductive sonic waves radiate with prevailing kinetic energy, absorbing feel-good vibrations and bursting forth spastic peculiarities.

Satomi Matsuzaki’s playful Japanese lyricism sounds exquisitely gorgeous as she croons over the pleasantly rhythmic title track. “Malalauma” gently sways to and fro, like palm trees caught in a coastal breeze, before suddenly becoming engulfed in a heavy tropical rainstorm. Breathtakingly mellow yet able to briefly transition into edgy and unsettling territory, “Spiral Golden Town’s” chiming fanfare no-wave synths and dance-pop bass lines sets a mood similar to the closing credits featured in some critically acclaimed foreign film. It just has that stunning cinematic feel, with exceedingly catchy appeal! It’s highly addictive to say the least.

Deerhoof have thoroughly surprised me with this release, which is no small feat considering its concise 15-minute format. Taking the emotive excursion to Green Cosmos’ galactic jade atmosphere is not simply recommended -- it’s imperative!
